Writing DVD movie backups on Windows

Decrypting DVDs
The first and most important piece of software to get is one that allows you to seamlessly read any discs freely. Most DVD movies and other data on DVDs is encrypted in a way that prevents the user from making a duplicate regardless of the intended use. A common one I see is parents who burn copies their kids eventually destroy so they can retain the original. AnyDVD from Slysoft. If you just want to burn off files, you can skip this but it’s a worthy investment. Add AnyDVDHD for decrypting HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs. DVD Decrypter was also a worthy program but development was stopped years ago by lawsuits and now this free software is very hard to find.

Re-Authoring DVD Movies
For taking a DVD movie and removing menus, trailers and FBI warnings, nothing is better than DVDShrink. It’s free and there are many helpful guides on sites like AfterDawn.

Burning ISO images
For burning ISO files etc, IMGBurn is the best and free.

General DVD burning
It seems Nero is still king.

Good resources for FAQs and guides on how to burn copies of everything from basic CD to dual layer DVD can be found at VideoHelp and AfterDawn.
