Multi Boxing Warcraft
World of Warcraft, where the greatest challenges boil down to working with others. To get the biggest prizes in the game requires the coordination of 5, 10, 25 and even 40 people. “More DOTs!“, “50 DKP minus!“. Unlike some other games, in WoW it is possible to accomplish many things completely alone but everyone eventually works with others to some common end, until now.
The folks from Solid ICE Technologies, much like most techies, are gamers as well. Their proclaimed favorite MMOG is Shadowbane, where battles of 200 versus 200 are common. The problem they were trying to solve was numbers and they did so with a product they created called KeyClone. KeyClone was not an entirely unique endeavor, there is a community for multi-boxing at Dual-Boxing.com. The goal was to be able to control multiple characters in a MMORPG much like you would do on a console RPG.
For WoW the value of KeyClone is less about numbers and more about control. As we know, the challenge is getting the right combination of characters together all doing what they are supposed to be doing at the right time. It’s common to see people complaining about how other people play the game, attack the same target, no one afk, etc. Users of KeyClone report taking 5 characters from 1-60 in 9 to 10 days, not only is this faster but you get the value of 5 characters leveled. Ultimately it’s not better than 5 skilled individuals who all play together so often they know what to do. Outside your main character it’s almost a necessity the other characters be identical and casters seem to work better. All Mages and all Warlocks are pretty powerful groups, but the best video I have seen and the inspiration for this blog came from a player named X-Box running a group of 5 Draeni Shaman.
He has several videos where he does things like Heroic Sethekk Halls and 5v5 arena with 4 shaman and 1 pally. His videos are kinda rough, not well edited, so the utube video chose is done by a third party. The music on the video is a mash-up of two different tracks into one hit of 2007, Perfect Exceeder.
